Watchman Peak

Watchman Peak is one of the crown jewels of Crater Lake National Park, providing fantastic photographic opportunities and panoramic views.

Watchman Peak is a moderate hike that rewards you with a historic fire lookout at the top, offering stunning 360-degree views of Crater Lake and Wizard Island. The trail is about 1.7 miles (2.7 km) round trip, with an elevation gain of 400 feet (122 meters). The trailhead starts at the Watchman Overlook pullout, located 3.7 miles north and west of Rim Village on West Rim Drive. The name “Watchman” comes from the fire lookout tower built in 1932, which rangers still staff during fire season.

Directions from Crater Lake Lodge

  1. Head northwest on Rim Village Drive.

  2. Continue onto West Rim Drive.

  3. Drive for about 4 miles until you reach the Watchman Overlook pullout.

  4. Park your car, grab your gear, and start the adventure!
