Lightning Springs Trail

The Lightning Springs Trail is a moderate 8.4-mile round trip hike. Historically, it was a fire control road built in the 1930s, but now it's a scenic hiking trail. The trail descends from the rim of Crater Lake, passing through old-growth forests and open pumice fields. There are no lake views on the trail - it is more of an access point for hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail to access the lake.

Ecology and Wildfires

The trail is home to mountain hemlock, Shasta red fir, and lodgepole pine trees. The area has seen its share of wildfires, including the Bybee Creek wildfire, which has left parts of the forest recovering. Despite the scars, the regrowth adds a unique beauty to the landscape.
