Wizard Island Boat Tour

Wizard Island is a mesmerizing cinder cone that rises 763 feet (233 meters) above the surface of Crater Lake. It was formed about 7,300 years ago during the explosive collapse of Mount Mazama. The island’s shape, resembling a wizard’s hat, gave it its enchanting name. So, yes, if you squint and use a bit of imagination, you might just see Gandalf waving at you from the summit.

Cleetwood Cove Trail

The Cleetwood Cove Trail is the only way to access the lake and the boat tours to Wizard Island. It’s a steep, 1.1-mile (1.8 km) hike down (and don't forget, what goes down must come up—so save some energy for the return trip!). The trail descends about 700 feet (213 meters), so it’s a good workout. But trust me, the views and the photographic opportunities are worth every step. Just remember to bring your best pair of hiking boots, or you might find yourself starring in the next episode of "Slides Gone Wrong."
