Mt. Scott

Are you ready to snap some breathtaking photos and conquer the highest peak in Crater Lake National Park? Let's dive into the photography opportunities at Mt. Scott!

Directions to the Mt. Scott Trailhead from Crater Lake Lodge

Head East on Rim Drive: From Crater Lake Lodge, take East Rim Drive.

Continue for 15 miles: Keep driving until you reach the trailhead for Mt. Scott Trail.

Park and Hike: There's a medium-sized parking lot at the trailhead. Grab your camera gear (and I suppose some water and snacks) and start the hike!

Geology of Mt. Scott

Mt. Scott is a cinder cone volcano made of volcanic ash and pumice. It's part of the larger Mount Mazama eruption that formed Crater Lake. The trail passes through a pumice field, offering close-up views of the northern face of Mt. Scott.

The Climb: The hike is about 2.5 miles round trip with an elevation gain of 1,272 feet. It's considered moderately challenging, but the views are worth every step. Just remember to bring plenty of water and sun protection, especially since the trail is fairly exposed.

Best Photography Opportunities at Mt. Scott

Panoramic Views: At 8,929 feet, Mt. Scott offers panoramic views that will make your Instagram followers green with envy. You can capture the entire Crater Lake, Wizard Island, and the surrounding High Cascades. On a clear day, you can see Mt. McLoughlin to the west, and the Three Sisters to the north.

Fire Lookout: The historic fire lookout at the summit provides a unique vantage point. Just don't expect it to be open; it's been closed for years, but it still makes for a great photo backdrop.

Fun Fact: Mt. Scott is named after Levi Scott, an Oregon pioneer who helped lay the Applegate Trail. So, you're not just hiking a mountain; you're following in the footsteps of history!

So, lace up your hiking boots, pack your camera, and get ready for an adventure that will make your photos pop and your heart race. Happy snapping and happy hiking! πŸ“ΈπŸž
